Hi,
I have one question In Module 3-1, K to E.

22. John이 정오에 도착하지 않으면 깜짝쇼는 소용이 없게 될 것이다.
You said during the class, If John does not arrive at 12 on the dot(sharp), the surprise will be ruined.

but for me 'ruin' means more like '망치다(엉망으로 만들다), 파멸시키다' in strong way(?)

so i'm wondering what if i want to say more like soft way(좀 더 약하고 부드러운 의미), could i say, If John doesn’t arrive at noon, the surprise show will not work. ?

I know it's more important to understand whole sentences not one word by word but
I want to know how to say "소용이 없게 될 것이다" in other way.

-> Actually, the word "ruin" doesn't have to be that "strong"! You can frequently hear kids saying "you ruined my painting!" (너땜에 그림 망쳤잖아!) or "Are you trying to ruin my plan for Mason's birthday party!?" (내가 메이슨 생일파티 준비한걸 지금 망치려고 하는거임!?)... You could use it quite casually in fact! :)

To make it sound a little softer,

"If John doesn’t arrive at noon, the surprise show will not work." will work.

Like you said, usages of expressions depend on the context but generally "소용이 없게 될 것이다" can be expressed with...

- something will go to waste
- something will be no use
- something will be pointless/meaningless
