There was less furniture in the office after the interior designer was finished with the project.
What's the difference between the" was finished" and "finished"?
I don't understand why the finished should be passive.

The following two sentences have the exactly same meaning:
1. There was less furniture in the office after the interior designer 'was finished with' the project.
2. There was less furniture in the office after the interior designer 'finished' the project.
