Hi Mason 선생님,

I'd like to thank you first for all the translation lessons you gave.
I recentlycompleted the translation course and have started the interpretation course.
I was happy to see you again as my teacher!

While I was doing my homework and quiz, I came across this sentence and Iam having a little bit of difficulty translating/ interpreting it.

Elderly in all populations are at risk of pnuemonia which is one of the most common types of pulmonarydisease.

여기서 populations은 지구상의 모든 인구/ 사람들인가요?
Elderly를 노년층으로 해석하여도 괜찮은 것일까요?

"Elderly in all populations" 이 부분을 정확히 어떻게 통역해야 할지 몰라 여쭈어 봅니다.

Thank you as always!

Hello Sinae!

Thank you for your kind words! Let's have a look at your question.

The word "population" is often translated as "인구" and it can mean many different things depending on its context.

For instance, to ask "대한민국의 총 인구수는 몇명입니까?" you can simply say: "What is South Korea's population?"

Now, this could indeed be smaller and larger depending on which population we are talking about ex. Global population, population of Seoul, etc.

Therefore, saying "elderly in all populations" without clarifying a specific region, could be "[특정 지역/나라를 불문하고,] 모든 인구 중의 노년층들은" would be the correct interpretation.

I hope it helped!
