Hi, Allan! I am reviewing some of your lessons to prepare the midterm test and while I was watching about reading activities I wanted to ask you a few questions. If there is a new vocabulary or a structure in the reading text, should/can I present them before students read the text? I learned about pre-reading activities and there was a way to show students a picture and make them imagine to motivate them to read the text but can I just tell them the subject of the text and make them imagine? Because, I think it can be hard to find a proper picture related to some certain texts. Like always, I would appreciate if you explain in detail. Thank you in advance!

Hi Hyong Woo Choi,

Like you wrote, it does depend on the text you are going to read with your class.  Sometimes you will be able to find a picture, or the text already comes with a picture, and that will make it easy for you to design a 'pre-reading' activity where you get students to look at the picture and imagine something.  However, sometimes you can't easily find a picture that matches the topic.  In this case, it would be okay to tell students the topic of the subject, and then get them to imagine.

However, keep in mind, that this is just one of the many ideas that we can use for 'pre-reading' activities.  We can do a variety of different things (give students statements about the text and have them guess whether they're true or false, discuss the issue/topic of the text before starting, etc).  You also asked if you can present some new vocabulary and/or structure before the students read the text.  Sure, of course that would be a good idea.  However, I would say that if the text includes a lot of difficult vocabulary and/or structures, that it might actually be too difficult for your class.

Anyhow, I hope that helps, and good luck on the midterm test!
