Medical English C1

Medical English 1: Patient Interactions is the first in a series of three courses in the Medical English program at Glenn College. This course will teach students the different ways of interacting with patients over the phone and in person while using a variety of words and expressions related to patient interaction.

This course is broken into four modules with each module having two lessons. Each course has a quiz after each module, a cumulative midterm, and a final test. The final test is cumulative test of modules three and four.

 

Upon successful completion of Medical English 1, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and employ a variety of phrases when greeting and checking in patients at the hospital, doctor’s office, and over the phone
  2. Employ a variety of questions a nurse or doctor may ask when assessing their patients’ concerns
  3. Demonstrate competency in communicating with a variety of patients over the phone as an emergency dispatcher or a receptionist
  4. Identify different triage levels and identify different symptoms to assign patients in ER to appropriate priority levels of care
  5. Demonstrate appropriate usage of dental terminology when interacting with patients at the dentist
  6. Employ key phrases and vocabulary commonly used at a pharmacy and in the ER
  7. Provide accurate instructions in regards to medication dosage and describe possible side effects of certain medications to patients

Course and Homework Duration
Total course hours: 240 hours

Medical English 1 consists of a total of 80 hours. The duration to complete this course is 4 weeks from the start date.

Admission Requirements

 

Proof of English proficiency through one of the following:

  • BC English 12 with a minimum C+ grade
  • IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL band 46 - 59 or TOEC band 605 - 780
  • Glenn College English Proficiency Test with a 70% minimum

Completion Requirements

 

Graduation

For successful completion, the overall mark for this program must be a minimum of 70%.

 

Accreditation

Students upon successful completion of each course (a minimum overall mark of 70%) will be granted a certificate.
