Hi Mason,

I hope you are doing well. After watching all videos in module 1, I came up with a few questions about what was covered in the lectures.

I would highly appreciate it if you could clarify my doubts as below;

[English to Korean]

1. At XXX.com, we are committed to protecting your privacy ~,
XXX.com에서는 고객님의 개인정보를 보호하는 것에 최선을 다합니다.

If I am to interpret from Korean to English, can I interpret ' We strive to protect your privacy ~ ' ?

2. We provide a more personalized shopping experiences

Can I interpret as ' 좀 더 개인 최적화된 쇼핑 경험을 제공합니다.' ?

3. In the sight interpretation videos, Mason highlighted it is crucial to interpret a word-to-word for verbatim interpretation.

For the following sentence, can I interpret as ' 통역사 분도 함께 대항 통화에 참여 해도 될까요?' '통역사 분도 같이통화 진행하시는 것에 동의하십니까?' does it sound neutral?

Do I have your permission to continue with the interpreter on the phone with us?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Korean to English]

1. 이미 전화상으로 이 문제에 대해 상세히 논의 했으므로, 저는 회의가 도움이 된다고 보지 않습니다.
The modeled answer was;

' Since we thoroughly discussed the matter over the phone, a meeting is unnecessary. '.

However I would like to clarify if I can interpret as;

As we have discussed this issue in deep (or in depth) over the phone, I believe the meeting is unnecessary. '

2. The catalog contains the pricing, shipping ~~ information.

=> Can I interpret as;
     The catalog includes the pricing, shipping ~~~ .

3. 일부 친구들은 스펙을 쌓기 위해 하는 봉사활동 아니냐며 손가락 질하기도 했지만 ~~,

(model answer) Some of his peers thought badly of XXX because they thought ~~

~~ to build his resume ~~.

=> Can I interpret as;
Some of his peers point fingers on him because they thought ~ or
He was at blame for building resume by his peers ~~

4. The TV show hit the air in 2015
=> Can I replace to The TV show finally released in 2015. ?

Thank you.

Best regards,
Blaire

Hello Blaire,

Here are my answers to your questions!
----------------------------------

[English to Korean]

1. At XXX.com, we are committed to protecting your privacy ~,
XXX.com에서는 고객님의 개인정보를 보호하는 것에 최선을 다합니다.

If I am to interpret from Korean to English, can I interpret ' We strive to protect your privacy ~ ' ?

-> Sounds fine to me!

----------------------------------

2. We provide a more personalized shopping experiences

Can I interpret as ' 좀 더 개인 최적화된 쇼핑 경험을 제공합니다.' ?

-> Yes.

----------------------------------

-> Yes, I believe both interpretations are delivering the original meaning perfectly.

-> Saying “in deep” sounds a bit odd, “in-depth” would be perfect.

2. The catalog contains the pricing, shipping ~~ information.

=> Can I interpret as;

-> Yes, you can.

----------------------------------

3. 일부 친구들은 스펙을 쌓기 위해 하는 봉사활동 아니냐며 손가락 질하기도 했지만 ~~,

(model answer) Some of his peers thought badly of XXX because they thought ~~

He was at blame for building resume by his peers ~~

-> I think saying “pointed* fingers” would be fine but saying “at blame” would be wrong. Here, saying “손가락질 하다” means “비난하다” but saying someone is “at/to blame” makes it sound like this person did something wrong/illegal that makes them the cause of the problem. Overall the sentence “He was at blame for building resume by his peers ~~” sounds weird because in Korean it would sound like “그의 친구들은 그가 이력서를 작성한것에 책임이 있다고 말한다~~” (as if “building resume” caused his peers some problems.)

----------------------------------

4. The TV show hit the air in 2015
=> Can I replace to The TV show finally released in 2015. ?

-> Yes, but you would say “was released.”

----------------------------------

I hope this helps!
