--> Instead of " for a bit" , "for a time' can be used meaning "for a short time". Does it sound awkward ?

A) You need to translate the "없다" part, which you don't have. Also, you don't want to say "a mistake", which implies he has only made 1 mistake. Instead I would say : "He almost never goes past the deadline, in spite of making mistakes"
