Hi, Steve.

This is Mao, I have a question of writing section that we had the day before yesterday.
Can we use the words like north, east, south and west to describe a certain direction without compass on the question?
I try to answer this type of questions with a little bit more academic words but I wasn't sure if I can say ,for example, north instead of upside or above.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Regard,

Mao

Hello Mao,

Good question! Yes, you can use north and south, etc, without having a compass. It's a usual way to describe such maps. You can talk about the north side or to the north of. Those are both good phrases. You can also use phrases like in the top-left corner or on the right side of. Those are all going to work well. Above and below work fine. I wouldn't use a word like "upside." It doesn't really make sense in maps.

I hope that helps!
Steve
