Good Afternoon,

I have come up with a few questions on homework for module 2

1. migrate
immigrate
emigrate

>>Kindly advise the differences and I would appreciate it if you can provide me an example sentence.

2. Delay
Suspend
Put off
Postpone
>> All these 3 words sound similar to me. How does it differentiate?

3. Parity
Equality
Fairness

>> All these 2 words sound similar to me. How does it differentiate?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Article 2-4

Paragraph 1.

Children who never had access to pornography or the acquaintance of insidious strangers out to harm them can now have both with the click of a mouse.

>>In this sentence is "them" referring to the insidious strangers? I spent half an hour to make myself clear on this. Also, I am still curious about what will be the best Korean translation for this sentence.

Hi Blaire!

Great questions. I am happy to see you studying hard! Let’s see if I can help you.

1. migrate
immigrate
emigrate
>>Kindly advise the differences and I would appreciate it if you can provide me an example sentence.

migrate: to move somewhere within the country
ex) My family migrated from Busan to Seoul.
내 가족은 부산에서 서울로 이사했다.

immigrate: to move in to a different country
ex) My family immigrated to Canada.
내 가족은 캐나다로 이민을 갔다.

emigrate: to move out of a country
ex) My family emigrated from Korea.
내 가족은 한국에서 이민을 왔다.

-> Immigration and emigration do carry very similar meaning and you can also use it interchangeably depending on which preposition ('to' or 'from') you use. If I have to mention, I would say the word “immigration” is more commonly used than “emigration.”

2. Delay
Suspend
Put off
Postpone
>> All these 3 words sound similar to me. How does it differentiate?

-> I wouldn’t say there is a significant distinction between these four words. One might say “to delay” or “to put off” sound less formal than “to postpone” or “to suspend” but they all essentially carry very similar meanings.

3. Parity
Equality
Fairness
>> All these 2 words sound similar to me. How does it differentiate?

Parity and Equality can have the same meaning if we are talking about “동등” as in they are on the same “level”, or have the same value.
An expression "2x2" and an expression "2^2" (two-squared) both have the value 4. Therefore, you could say "2x2" and "2^2" have parity, or equality in their numerical value.

Equality and Fairness can have the same meaning if we are saying “treating everyone in the same way = fairness.”

But often we distinguish these two words, such as Equality (동등) and Fairness (공정, 공평).
This is because 동등 does not always mean 공평.
To note this difference, I suggest you look up what the difference between “equality” vs “equity.”

Let’s try to break this sentence down a little further.

1. Children who never had access to
2. (pornography)
3. or
4. (the acquaintance of insidious strangers out to harm them)
5. can now have both with the click of a mouse.

——————————————————————————

Here, “them” refers to the children.

I hope this helps.
