Good afternoon. I have currently completed and posted Module 5.
I have a question about the pronouns where I got feedback after finishing Module 1 to write all the pronouns that starts with a capital letter to write it in English as it is, and I got another feedback to write the names of the countries or cities in Korean, so I was confused and wrote mostly all of the pronouns in English again. I just hope that the examiner marking my paper is aware that I did not ignore the feedback.

Hi Seung Weon,

I am very glad you are asking this to clarify! Let’s see if we can clarify this matter better.

So what I wrote in your Module 5 feedback is that, although you are already doing a great job in translating many proper nouns, there are conventionally well-accepted common words that you can obviously translate into Korean.

I will give you some examples.

Try translating "William Lyon Mackenzie King" into Korean.

Is it 윌리엄 리온 맥캔지 킹? or is it 윌리엄 라이온 맥켄지 킹? 윌리엄 리옹 맥켄지 왕?

See here, this is vague. We might not be pronouncing Lyon correctly. We do not know what the correct way to spell things because it is not commonly said in Korean.

Therefore, you might want to just leave "William Lyon Mackenzie King" in English. That is what I was mentioning in Module 2.

Now try translating, Russia and North America.

In my opinion, I think conventionally one can translate them into 러시아 and 북미 without a doubt.

Yes, one can always argue with this forever by saying “oh but this can be translated this way, and that can be translated that way, blah blah blah.” That is exactly why I have specifically mentioned that you WILL NOT get your marks deducted for leaving proper nouns as they are in this course. I was merely pointing this out because this might not be the case in real life. Some employers might find your work unfaithful if you leave literally every single proper noun untranslated.

I hope this helps! Also, I am the examiner who will be marking all of your homework and exams (except the ITT exam) so I know you have not ignored my feedback. Thank you for checking in with me though!
