I will try my best to explain.  First of all, you are right, using visual examples are an excellent way to explain structures, in general.  HOWEVER, it is not always possible. 

The best example of the contrast between using visual examples and situational examples is from a previous lesson.  Let's imagine you are going to explain the structure "~too~to~".  You draw a picture of hot soup, or a heavy weight, and get students to say, "it is too hot to eat" and "it is too heavy to lift".  That's great.  On the other hand, oftentimes when it comes to dealing with more difficult/complicated structures, using visual examples is often not possible.  Let's say we have to explain the structure, "there is no point in verb+ing something".  Can you think of how we could use visual examples to help us explain?  I can't, and therefore, when it comes to presenting the meaning of more difficult structures, we will have to rely on providing situational examples.
