what matters is whether we’re able to make ourselves understood.
your translation : 중요한 것은 남들이 우리 말을 알아 들을 수 있는지 없는지
my translation:중요한 것은 우리가 우리 자신을 이해할 수 있는지 없는지
If I make literal translation, it would be "중요한 것은/ 인지 아닌지다/ 우리가 능력이 있는지/우리 스스로를 이해하게 할"
Can you explain to me why you did translate like that?

Hello Nayun,

I think this just has to do with knowing the expression and understanding how it is used.

“to make myself understood” means “남들이 나를 이해하도록 만들다”, not “나 스스로를 이해하다.”

So, if you want to say “너 내 말 알아들어?” then you can say:

“Am I making myself understood?”
“Am I making myself clear?”

If you indeed wanted to say “우리가 우리자신을 이해할 수 있는지 없는지…” then the English sentence should have been:

“What matters is whether we are able to understand ourselves or not..."

I hope this makes sense!

Best regards,
